Up until this year, you wouldn’t catch me anywhere sans makeup. Anywhere! Much less on social media. If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I’m on my stories all the time in the nude– the selfie kind! If you’re reading this, you may even have been apart of the folks who voted for me to drop the skin routine and regime. If you would have asked me a few years ago if I would ever feel like I could offer skin care advice, at all I’d laugh right in your face (or perhaps cry)!
Life comes at us fast.
I started experiencing acne my senior year of high school, but at the time it was very minimal and, at most, hormonal– a blemish here, an acne scar there, but nothing alarming.
By the time I entered my 20s, I started to have serious issues with acne and scarring. I had a hard time finding the right products to not only clear up my acne, but prevent it, while fading my scarring and improving my skin’s texture.
This was the only picture I could find of my skin, minus makeup, when it was at its worst. I was not in the business of documenting my skin during this time. I was experiencing extreme depression and my skin was not helping with my condition AT ALL. Whenever I’m experiencing bouts of depression, I’ve historically isolated myself from friends and family. With my skin and acne being a major blow to my confidence, the issues of depression and isolation were only compounded.
After some time, and some therapy, I knew I had to take control of my life again. One thing that I’ve learned in life is, the way you do one thing, is the way you do everything. When my skin’s health is going by the wayside, that’s an indicator of how I’m treating, loving, and caring for myself, overall. At least in my experience. These days my skin is flourishing and I’m sharing all of my lessons learned below!
Take one step at at time.
Seriously. When I started taking small steps like, drinking more water, walking longer distances, standing for longer periods of the day, eating cleaner– I noticed shifts hat made room for drastic improvement in other areas of my life.
Research your skin type.
Back when my acne was at its peak, I was stripping my skin, using salicylic acid, and trying to dry my acne out. Little did I know, I actually have combination-to-dry skin. Drying my skin out will actually lead to more breakouts because it sends my skin into overdrive to produce oil, leading to clogged pores. The key was to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
Invest in products leveraging SPF and collagen.
Texture makes a difference. Protection and preventative measures are important to bomb skin. Like I mentioned above, dry skin leads to debris that mixes with the oil your skin produces and clogs your pores. Additionally, the sun can harm your skin beyond the obvious– of course the sun can dry your skin out, encourage the appearance of fine lines, but it also can encourage dark spots and scarring. Collagen will help soften your skin, encourage cell turnover, and fill those fine lines, while SPF will prevent pronounced scaring and work as a preventative measure for your skin’s texture and overall health!
So what do I use?
I stumbled across Derma E’s Advanced Peptides and Collagen suite of products through YouTube University. I’ve been real big into watching beauty tutorials lately and I’ve tried a few products that were nice, but didn’t quite wow me. Needless to say, when I decided to give Derma E a try, my expectations were not very high after being let down so many times before, but man did Derma E deliver!
I’ve never been an overly-involved beauty regime sort of girl, but I can’t lie, I’ve enjoyed taking the extra time in the evenings especially before heading to sleep. I use Derma E’s full Skin Restore line along with the Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Oil every night without fail and it’s had my skin feeling softer than it has since my high school years!
Each morning, I wash my face with a warm wash cloth before using their serum, eye cream, and moisturizer for a light, but skin-quenching routine before applying my makeup. After all, good makeup starts with good skin– but sometimes I bare my skin because Derma E’s had me feeling that much more confident in my skin again.
Since using Derma E, my skin has been soft, supple, and visibly more youthful and hydrated. I have zero acne scarring. I don’t break out. I’m basically back to my teen self again, let me tell it! The price point is fair and Ulta is constantly offering beauty sales that make it worth the investment to try out. So go ahead! Give it a try and check back here to let me know how it goes!
